Pollution can be defined as any undesirable alteration in the physical, 
chemical or biological characteristics of any component of the environment
 i.e. air, water, and soil which can cause harmful effects on various forms of
 life or property.

Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the
environment. Pollution causes damage to humans, plants, and animal life.
Pollution and types of Pollution

1996 EU Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control 

provides the following definition: 

Pollution shall mean the direct or indirect introduction as a result of human

 activity, of substances, vibration, heat, or noise into the air, water, or land 

which may be harmful to human health or the quality of the environment

, result in damage to material property, or impair or interfere with amenities

 and other legitimate uses of the environment.
